The Greats: Bonnie Prince Billy’s “Gulf Shores”

The Prince at his best, revisiting music from his youth. A clearly personal story about something I can’t figure out, this tune weaves in out of the sand slowly, pulling you deeper and deeper into the earth. The strangest part of it all is that it somehow sounds like a very specific time of day and describes the unique twilight lighting you can only see on the Gulf Coast. From the white sand reflection, the sun almost a quarter set, and the greenish glow from the water, this piano progression somehow “sounds” exactly the way you see it.
